Community Based Cultural Tourism in Uttarakhand nominated by : rajeshpanwar | August 18, 2008
Country: India
Organization: UDGAM
Website: www.udgam.in
Project Description:
UDGAM(A not for profit organization) found that migration of rural educated youths is a major problem of the hills of Uttarakhand. A primary reason for such migration is not so much lack of livelihood opportunities available in the region but lack of knowledge and participation in the existing and potential livelihood opportunities. UDGAM found that tourism is a fast growing industry in this region but local society especially the villagers have almost no stake and benefit very little from the progress of this industry. It is to bring a change in this scenario that UDGAM group has began promotion of “Sanskriti” an ‘Eco-Cultural Tour with Home Stay’ provisions in the villages of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. About 60-70% of the total amount recieved from the tourists directly goes to direct stakeholders i.e. villagers and rest to indirect stakeholders of Sanskriti i.e. guides, vendors, travel agents etc.
rajeshpanwar's Story:
I am inspired by this program as maximum amount of money recieved from the tourists directly goes to villagers. These villagers are being trained by the organization on sustainable and responsible tourism including optimum utilization of natural resources.
