It's really a pretty sad situation that any slavery, in any nation, is still happening today. Will we still have nations taking part in slavery in the year 3000? I mean goodness gracious!

You realize that the U.S. could stop it? If we stopped screwing around and wasting time and money on things like Iraq, think of all the effort we could put towards things like global warming and AIDS. ;{

Selection form the 15 finalists purely on the merit of the highest votes secured through online is not a fair process. It is rather silly. Without going into the qualitative aspects of the 15 interventions and evaluating the merits of of each of the contributions but deciding the outcome of the competition on thebasis of mobilising the highest online votes is also injustice to the groups who might be doing outstading work to end gobal slavery but who may not be in a position to mobilisation online voters, especially those who are from the southern hemisphere. It looks the competion is heavily weighted against the contributions from the third world countries who might have excelent personal moblisiation skills but might be poor in mobilising people with internet connections. Besides, the poorer countries do not have that much of exposure to internet compared to those from the first world, the USA and tghe European countries. Further, the criteria for selecting the various entires for the competition on global slavery seem to have been confused. There does not seem to be any clear understanding of what are the contemporary forms of slavery. Anyone working on reducing poverty, wroking on child labour, dometstic labour is considered working on slavery. But clearer criteria for the understanding of modern day forms of slavery and the interventions to counter them is called. Also compulsorily making the voter to vote for three without any priority among them is also not proper. I feel the organisers must take into account these observations and see some rectification is possible while selecting theultimate three winners for the award.

This is a wonderful cause and a good competition, but I am concerned about the gross disparate of applicants. How can this be a fair competition when some organizations already have huge budgets, while others are so meager in comparison. Where will $5,000 go further? That's not an easy answer. In some ways, the smaller organizations have much more to gain from the $, yet in other ways, the larger organizations may use the money better based on experience....not a given, but perhaps a good possibility. In addition, it would have been helpful if every entry showed responses to the same questions. This also makes it difficult.....you can't evaluate them equally. I voted, but found it very difficult based on the disparity. I'd love to hear comments from others.

I am a teacher and a volunteer working with various NGOs. I have been associated with Kiran of Vimukti Trust for around 3 years and am very touched by the work this trust is involved in. In fact I got to know about this organisation while I was visiting a NGO at Bhopal working for the relief of Gas Victims. I visited a set of film makers from Switzerland who told me about Vimukti and Kiran. One of the activities of t
2. Stopping child labour through universalisation of quality primary education
This organisation is setting up schools at different interior parts of Karnataka and working towards identifying and helping bonded labour children to get away from the bonded labour and get educated. I have visited these schools and felt the intensity of the work involved.

3 Cheers to this organisation for growing and encompassing more parts where exploitation is happening to enable these children to see a new light for a better life.

So, can I tell all my friends about the competitions and make them voters too by having them sign up and join the discussion? Is this really open source in the sense that it's "open" to anyone wanting to join in?
Thanks,
Aaron

Dear Eileen -

The large amount of money for Google Ads that is involved in the online selling of women (that is albeit "unknown" to Google at this time) is one of the most important points where action groups can be mobilized to help countless women (and children) who are being trafficked today. The top tier of Google must be pressured to stop accepting monies from traffickers. This can only happe in one way. Action can begin now by creating an ongoing global team that will carefully document each and every online Google ad possible that is in fact selling women (and children). Once this documentation has reached a point of "no denial," then these detailed figures and statistics need to be presented to Google corporate. Efforts to get Google's policy changed in accepting these ads can work if enough dedication and proper documentation can take place.

A global online documentation team to chart the online selling of women and children should begin to form today... right now.

Do I understand your statement correctly that at this time there is no existing organization that is documenting these ads? Has there been any movement in creating such a global team? Thanks.

by lysanzia on August 6, 2008 - 03:19

As far as I know, at this time there is no agency or group that is documenting the connection between some of the ads sponsored by Google and the trafficking of women. This documentation happen. But all information needs to be completely accurate and carefully documented. If anyone has any interest in forming such a group to investigate online use of advertising (especially Google Adwords ads) by traffickers, please feel free to contact me.

I am working on art and music education (through One Laptop Per Child and Sugar Labs), and on e-commerce for artists and musicians (as Earth Treasury), and I have experience in doing things for less money than anyone would think possible. Tell me what you have and what you want to do. I am fairly sure that I can put you in touch with organizations that can help, such as Novica.com, which partners with National Geographic to sell art on eBay and on its own site, with most of the money going to the artists. Similarly for Overstock.com and several others.

When searching for info on countries that are known for sex tourism, the automatically produced google ads, led me to vacation sites that offer packages for sex tourism. Some of these included ads for under-aged girls. This led me to question, should search engines such as google be responsible for the content in their ads? Should it not prohibited to disseminate information on illegal trades? What can be done about the promotion of of illegal sex tourism through the internet?
